lipidÃÂ from a solidmaterial. However, a Soxhlet extractor is not limited to the extraction oflipids. Typically, a Soxhlet extraction is only required where the desiredcompound has aÃÂ limitedÃÂ solubilityÃÂ inaÃÂ solvent, and the impurity isÃÂ insoluble in that solvent. If the desired compound hasa high solubility in a solvent then a simpleÃÂ filtrationÃÂ canbe used to separate the compound from the insoluble substance.
Normallya solid material containing some of the desired compound is placed inside athimble made from thickÃÂ filter paper, which is loaded into the mainchamber of the Soxhlet extractor. The Soxhlet extractor is placed onto a flaskcontaining the extractionÃÂ solvent. The Soxhlet is then equipped with aÃÂ condenser.
Thesolvent is heated toÃÂ reflux. The solvent vapour travels up aÃÂ distillationÃÂ arm,and floods into the chamber housing the thimble of solid. The condenser ensuresthat any solvent vapour cools, and drips back down into the chamber housing thesolid material.
The complete soxhlet extraction apparatus consists of solventreservoir extraction assembly with 6 extraction places to suit 100 ml flasks to250 ml flasks and built in steam generator. Complete with stand, clamp holdersoxhlet extraction (Condenser) glass and extraction flask of 60 ml volume.
